Leveling Up

An interview with James Ivy Jr., StepUp Board Member and Alumni

I’m excited to introduce the people and the stories behind StepUp. I’ve been chatting with board members, partners, participants and volunteers about their involvement in StepUp and have quickly learned that no matter what capacity it is that people come to StepUp, they walk away transformed.

Can you explain your involvement with StepUp and how it has transformed your life?

James: My involvement with StepUp is a unique one actually, I'm not sure if there are many that have attempted to go through multiple times. The third time was the time that I was actually able to grasp what was needed on my part to complete the program.  I had to understand where I needed to be, and really come to grips with my life altering. It began with surrendering to God's will for my life and then committing to myself. StepUp allowed me to see just what I was truly capable of. All of that has made me a better person, a better father, a better citizen, and a better grandfather. It's inspired me to constantly be in a state of giving because they give so genuinely from such a pure place. So I seek opportunities to give or to inspire and to empower. StepUp Ministry has given me an opportunity to overcome my fear of leveling up.

You touched on StepUp’s mission a little bit, but can you tell me what makes the mission so powerful to you?

James: Their mission of transforming lives through employment and life skills training is evident. For me, it would be more of their value statement that speaks about their belief that lives are truly transformed through God's grace and mercy. That's what proves paramount because you can give people all of these resources, you can teach them how to budget their money, you can teach them how to be better versions of themselves, but what you can't teach is the ability for someone to be in a heart space and a spiritual space to understand that. This doesn't happen without a measure of God's grace and God's mercy.

What is the best piece of advice you would give regarding being a business owner, starting your career, or transforming your life?

James: From a career standpoint, the best advice that I've ever gotten is to seek a way to profit from a gift or a skill that you're truly committed to and passionate about. Once I started cutting hair, and getting into the barber industry it really clicked that I really enjoy doing this. And it was the ambition to extend a ministry from this because it's greater than just cutting hair. It's teaching a lot of the young guys about etiquette and how to communicate and how to carry themselves as gentlemen.

I also want to add that the greatest advice I ever got about life in general was from my father and that was to simply never give up. I don't care what happens, things are going to happen, life is going to be challenging, but just never ever, ever give up.

Some of the work we do is to help people walk through barriers to employment, but I think there's also a conversation to be had about the systems that perpetuate these barriers. What does that look like to you?

James: I guess I have an alternative view. I have to first refer to my father's advice to never give up because I can honestly say that every one of these barriers has affected me personally. And the no’s take a toll when you've got criminal history, you've got a criminal background, you've experienced homelessness. But it wasn't until I adopted an overcomers mindset instead of a ‘going through challenges’ mindset, that my whole existence began to shift for the better.

There are systems that are, in my opinion, designed to be barriers for certain demographics or for certain races, and that's just the fact of what it is. So when we understand that and get away from it we set out to destroy any of these false images and false barriers. So in my alternative view, you have to switch from a mindset of focusing on the systemic pitfalls and you have to overcome. There is nothing that I will not attempt to overcome by any means necessary.

Shifting gears a bit since we have entered a new year. What is the biggest lesson that you have learned either as an individual or within your business in the last year?

James: The biggest lesson I've learned in this last year is all kind of wrapped up in everything, the business, my personal life, finances, social unrest and COVID-19, the political arena, it seems to be a total mess. The biggest thing I've learned is that you can still have joy in the midst. They can't take that. Joy isn't isn't an innate characteristic and happiness depends on happenstance. But joy is something that you could have in the midst of anything and all the chaos.

Can you tell me about something you’re listening to, reading, watching, or learning about that is changing your life right now?

James: I'll pay attention every day in every snippet, every encounter, every broadcast. We can learn something from it all and acquire new knowledge toward our optimal selves. That's what I do. I'm always keeping my head on a swivel. Everything teaches me a lesson.

Is there anything else that you could think of that you wanted to share or talk about?

James: I will just wrap it up with this– remain thankful and just spread genuine love. Be thankful for those who have helped you because StepUp Ministry, I owe a debt of gratitude. I owe the rest of my life to continue to be worthy of the kindness that has been bestowed upon me by StepUp Ministry. And I won't stop until I do as much as I can. I promise you that.

Never Settle

Nauresha joined Life Skills in January 2020 with her six month old daughter. She did not have her driver’s license so she was paying $40 a day five days a week in Lyft fees for transportation. She was ready for a change and wanted to do something different for her daughter.

Fast forward to December 2020, Nauresha graduated from Life Skills with her driver’s license, a new car, a new apartment furnished through The Green Chair Project and a full-time job with Amazon.

Nauresha counts many of the accomplishments she had during her time in the program as some of her greatest.  “Since Life Skills I’ve got my license back, I got my car, I got a place and I start school in January so everything pretty much because I wouldn’t have thought about starting school again if it wasn’t for Life Skills.”

“My biggest takeaway from Life Skills is to never settle, keep pushing forward. If you have a goal then go for it and don’t let anything hold you back.”

One to Watch

“No one could have told me over 30 years ago that I could be a leader but now I can boldly declare that I hold a position of leadership over a group of individuals from various ages and backgrounds.”

Shareasa Dunn graduated from Step2/Life Skills in 2015. Five years later, her list of involvements and accomplishments only continues to grow from serving as Alumni Program Secretary and Treasurer in 2016 to speaking at StepUp Sunday at White Memorial Church to becoming Club President of StepUp Speakers’ Circle in 2020.

“Being with StepUp Ministry has given me so much more than just tools to better my life such as budgeting, stress management, making S.M.A.R.T. goals, resume building, interviewing and public speaking skills, it has given me the strength, determination, and power to always look at each day in my life as the path to a better me.”

Currently, Shareasa is working two jobs, maintaining a 4.0 GPA in pursuit of an Associates Degree to be a Medical Administrative Assistant and still attending the Alumni Program and leading StepUp Speakers’ Circle.

“I have more growth to make, higher steps to climb and even greater heights to reach because settling on just the minimum is not the way I foresee my future... I'm so happy that I was able to make the step up to better myself because the pace I've been running this race at has propelled me ahead farther than I could think or imagine.”

I'm Just Dreaming Bigger Now

Starting over isn’t easy and transforming your life in the middle of a pandemic is even harder, but Nathaniel knows the rewards of taking a chance and asking for support when you need it.

In 2019, Nathaniel moved to Raleigh with plans to make positive choices and seek new opportunities. He found StepUp and completed the Employment Training Workshop in July of 2019 to gain resume and interview advice, access to potential employers and support throughout his job search. His next step was to enroll in the Step2/Life Skills program to continue working towards his goals.

Step2 is a 48-week program that focuses on developing financial literacy and communications skills, creating a network, building savings and providing job support. Each participant is paired with a copartner that serves as a friend and mentor. Nathaniel was meeting weekly and building a community with his copartner, case manager and the rest of the Step2 participants.

The pandemic hit in the middle of Nathaniel’s journey through Step2. This major life upheaval was hard on everyone, but StepUp shifted all programming, Step2 moved to virtual platforms and Nathaniel stuck with it.

Throughout the 48 weeks, Nathaniel regained his driver’s license, got a new job, earned a promotion and is currently on his way to a second promotion.

“I went from [being] a driver to a crew manager to now being in a position to be shop manager so that is the greatest accomplishment that has come through this life skills program.”

Nathaniel had goals in mind, StepUp just helped him get there. He graduated from the program in September along with nine other participants. When asked about the biggest lesson he learned from the life skills program, Nathaniel said, “The biggest thing that I’ve taken from the life skills program is to continue in persistence, to continue to keep going no matter what it looks like, no matter what obstacles come, that you can make it through.”

Today, Nathaniel is making plans for his future career growth and success. He says, “I’m just dreaming bigger now.”

Officers in StepUp Speakers’ Circle, which is part of the Alumni Ambassadors program, were recently awarded the Toastmasters International 2019 District Incentive Strength in Numbers. These officers demonstrated a tremendous commitment to the club by attending required training sessions, attaining distinguished status in 2019, and meeting membership requirements throughout the year. StepUp Ministry Alumni Participants have a new name: StepUp Ambassadors! The alumni program has committed to assigning Life Skills program graduates as mentors to our incoming Alumni Program participants. Requirements for StepUp Ambassadors include being one year removed from the Life Skills program as a graduate, being in good standing and actively involved in the Alumni program, and demonstrating leadership skills through participation in our Toastmasters Club Program. The Ambassadors will work closely with new members to help them achieve their short-term and long-term career goals while offering guidance for their continued journey towards stability.

The StepUp Speakers’ Circle Toastmasters International Club welcomed six new members while welcoming back three re-activating club members. The club also received its President’s Distinguished Club ribbon, the highest level a club can achieve through Toastmasters International! The StepUp Speakers Circle also enjoyed a visit from a Toastmasters International keynote speaker, Dr. Kevin Synder. During the club meeting, Dr. Kevin read an excerpt from one of his new books, Think Differently. Dr. Kevin was so inspired by the club members that he became one himself! We welcome Dr. Kevin as a professional speaker and dedicated mentor.

StepUp Ministry Finds Reason to Celebrate the End of Summer

Bashirah Hill was reunited with her teen daughter earlier this year. Together, Bashirah and her daughter Hope moved into their new 2-bedroom home. The family visited Green Chair to select furniture and other items for their new home. It was a great joy experiencing them customize and beautify their new home together. Picking out new furniture was a game-changer for Bashirah. She shared that she had been using the furniture left in her apartment by the previous tenant. They chose pieces for their living room, dining room, and bedroom. After furnishing their new house, Bashirah told us: "This now feels like home."

Amirah Wright became the proud owner of a Wheels 4 Hope vehicle this month. The Car Blessing took place at the church where the car donor, who is also a volunteer mechanic for Wheels 4 Hope, is a member. The evening began with church members providing a meal for the family and continued with brief remarks from Wheels 4 Hope staff and the donor. Afterward, the Car Blessing commenced in the parking lot. Amirah and her three children then drove off in their new vehicle. As it so happened, Amirah was offered a full-time position earlier that day, which will provide her with stable employment. Having the Car Blessing on the same day as receiving news of permanent employment was a dream come true for Amirah. Amirah is well on her way to stable employment, something that has been a concern of hers after having her third child a year ago. Amirah now believes that she is in the position to become more involved in the Alumni program and is willing to be a proud Ambassador for StepUp Ministry.

Earlier this month, Wanda Daramola, an Alumni Ambassador, participated in a Back to School Event and Information Session sponsored by the City of Cary in partnership with StepUp Ministry, Cary Emergency Response Team, Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian Church, Wake County Human Services, and Telamon Head Start. Wanda shared the experiences she and her family had at StepUp. She also facilitated the information session that included questions from attendees. The day was full of food and fun, as well as book bags filled with school supplies. The event included games and face painting, but the highlight of the day may have been the visit from a few local firefighters on their fire truck.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

StepUp Life Skills, Alumni, and Employment Week participants, along with staff and 30 volunteers, came together for our annual Christmas party. After sharing a delicious holiday meal, we played a game of Family Feud, heard festive tunes, and took plenty of pictures in the photo booth. Santa stopped by to hear the Christmas wishes of our children, and we got to enjoy some Christmas songs by the Fountain Singers from the Fountain of Raleigh and the Junior League of Raleigh Choir. Thanks to everyone who gave of their time and talents to make this event a success!
